When approaching this canvas of salvaged barn wood that is roughly 4'x4', there was an undeniable pang of fear that forced itself to the surface of my awareness. The fear started as a whisper but quickly became a booming voice, echoing in my head, "What are you going to put on this giant thing?" I closed my eyes, took in a long soothing breath, and in the garden of my heart was a magnificent lion. He was at peace and radiated a quiet strength that shifted me back into the present moment. It was in that space that I couldn't help but laugh at how I let a little voice grow into something so imposing, and I knew that the "Laughing Lion Heart" would take his rightful place on "that giant thing," the canvas.

The Tiger gently reminds us to sit confidently in our own power. It teaches us to channel our passions productively. The Tiger knows when to pounce on an opportunity or to wait for something better to come along.

This painting is an opportunity for me to see myself as I am. The black and white textured chaos of legible and illegible words is matched by a black and white depiction of myself. The texture manifests itself as scarring on my skin alluding to the harshness I experience as I sit amongst the black and white chaos of the world. The brightly colored harmony of spirit seeps into my hair and skin both healing and rejuvenating my sense of being.
Self Portrait/ 3'6"x5'11"/ Acrylic and Charcoal on Paper and Birch Wood/ 2018
This Powerful painting was conceived during a time in my life when I experienced a series of consecutive heartbreaks. It is a depiction of my soul attempting to allow the heartache to “fly” through me so that healing could take place. Little did I know that at the time of the conception of both the pain and the painting, those experiences would “Make Me” rather than “Break Me”….And for that I am Grateful! There is FREEDOM in Forgiveness. Now that the pain has flown away my Soul can SOAR!

When Creating my work I always start by asking myself, what do I want to see today? Sometimes an image is conjured in my mind's eye and other times it appears directly on the canvas. In the case of the Octopus, it appeared directly on the canvas and I simply made it so others could see it too.

The Space Otter was inspired by a dream I had as a child where I was swimming in a Galaxy with an Otter. It clearly left an impression on me because I recreated that dream in this painting.
Acrylic on Train Metal | 22”x18" | 2017
The Field Fox is another one of the many paintings that essentially painted itself. I started with the ear and allowed the brush to complete the fox's form. When I was finished there was a fox staring back at me with quiet dignity.

When working with found material I prefer to let the natural beauty of that material coexist with the painting. In the case of the Disappearing Elephant it was important to me that the viewer's gaze move back and forth from the brightly colored elephant to the dark grainy wood. Not only creating balance but also a subtle sense of movement.
Acrylic on Barnwood | 43”x11" | 2017
The Sea Turtle Painting was inspired by a knot in the wood which became the turtle's eye. The Sea Turtle represents ancient wisdom, going with the flow, and navigating through one's own journey with ease. The circles are not only a quiet nod to Hung Liu, an artist whom I greatly admire, but they also represent the infinite nature of being, which compliments the idea of the journey being far greater than the destination.

Cahaba River Canoe-dling is a manifestation of my love of being on the River, and sharing that love with those closest to me.

For this painting I chose to depict the fox in action. A far cry from the stoic gaze of the field fox this painting shows a more playful side to the fox's nature with bright colors representing the visual impact of the fox diving into the snow.

The Audio Snake Collection was inspired by a Rattle Snake tail that belonged to my father. As a Child I would shake it and imagine what the sound would look like as the tail rattled.

The Medicine Snake Paintings were inspired by a poem about words and how they have the power to harm or heal. A snake's venom can be used to harm or it can be used as medicine to heal. Both paintings have the words 'Harm' and 'Heal' embedded in them, and the two headed snake represents the choice one makes when using their words to either harm or heal others.

The Water Crows painting is simply a playful representation of one crow "bathing" another crow. This painting was particularly fun because it incorporates miniature crows that make up the two larger crows which were executed with expressive mark making in ink and watercolor. Plus, it just makes me smile...and that's the point after all, isn't it?
